You Were Created With Purpose

Purpose is not something you find; it is something you learn to live.

“What is my purpose?”

It is a question I hear asked often.

I hear it from young people trying to work out what direction their lives should take. I hear it from people questioning whether they are in the right career or whether they are making the most of the gifts they have been given. I hear it from people who have achieved many things yet still carry a quiet feeling that something is missing.

And perhaps, if we are honest, many of us have asked this question at some point.

What am I here for?

Does my life matter?

Am I making a difference?

For a long time, I thought purpose was something I had to discover. I believed it was connected to the right career, the right opportunity, or perhaps a specific thing God wanted me to do.

I thought that once I found the answer, everything would become clearer.

But over time, I began to realise that perhaps I had misunderstood purpose.

Perhaps purpose was never something waiting for me somewhere in the future.

Perhaps it was something God had already woven into who I am.

The more I reflected on my own journey, the more I began to see that purpose was never just about a role, a title, or an achievement.

The roles we have in life change.

The seasons we walk through change.

The responsibilities we carry change.

But there can be a thread that remains constant.

When I look back over my own life, I can see a consistent desire to encourage people, help others grow, develop others, and create spaces where people can recognise their potential.

I did not always have the words to describe it.

I did not always recognise it as purpose.

But looking back, I can see that I was already living parts of it.

I wonder how often we do the same.

We spend so much time searching for purpose that we overlook the ways it is already being expressed through our lives.

Perhaps the question is not only:

“What is my purpose?”

Perhaps the deeper question is:

“How is purpose already showing up in my life?”

Because what if purpose is not something missing that we need to find?

What if it is something God has already placed within us that we need to become more aware of?

This is where I believe many people carry unnecessary pressure.

We sometimes treat purpose as though it is a hidden answer we must uncover before we can truly begin living. We worry that we will make the wrong decision, choose the wrong path, or somehow miss what God intended for us.

But what if the foundation of purpose is not found first in what we do?

What if it begins with understanding who we are?

Psalm 139 gives us a beautiful picture of how God sees us:

“You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Before we had a career.

Before we developed our gifts.

Before anyone recognised our abilities.

Before we achieved anything.

God already knew us.

We were intentionally created by Him.

Purpose is not an addition to our lives. It is not something we receive once we become successful, visible, or accomplished.

Purpose is woven into who we are because it comes from the one who created us.

Think about a simple example.

A blender does not become a blender when someone switches it on for the first time. Its purpose was already part of its design. Whether it is being used every day or sitting quietly in a cupboard, its purpose has not changed.

The same is true of us.

Our circumstances may change.

Our roles may change.

Our seasons may change.

But the purpose God placed within us does not disappear.

The journey is learning to recognise it and faithfully live it.

Have you been searching for purpose as though something is missing from your life?

What if God has already placed purpose within you, and the invitation is to become more aware of how it is being expressed?

What I’m Learning

What I’m learning is that purpose is much bigger than a career, a platform, or a particular achievement.

Purpose is not limited to what we do.

It is reflected in how we live.

It shows up in the way we love our families, encourage others, serve, lead with integrity, use our gifts, and show up faithfully in the everyday moments of life.

Sometimes we are waiting for something significant to happen before we believe we are living purposefully.

But perhaps purpose is often revealed through the ordinary.

The conversations we have.

The people we influence.

The values we live by.

The way we choose to use what God has placed in our hands.

Purpose is not something we have to chase.

It is something we learn to recognise.

A Small Step This Week

Instead of asking yourself, “What is my purpose?” take some time to ask:

“Where do I see purpose already showing up in my life?”

Pay attention to the things that come naturally to you, the ways you encourage others, the values that matter deeply to you, and the moments where you feel you are contributing something meaningful.

Reflection Question

What if you are not waiting to find your purpose, but learning to recognise the purpose God has already woven into your life?

Faith Reflection

Psalm 139 reminds us that we are not accidental. We are known, formed, and intentionally created by God.

The God who created us is not asking us to discover a purpose he forgot to give us. He is inviting us to walk with him and become increasingly aware of the purpose he has already placed within us.

We may not always know every step ahead, but we can trust the one who knows us completely.

Prayer

Lord, I pray for the person reading this today.

Where they have felt uncertain, lost, or afraid that they have missed their purpose, remind them that they were created intentionally by you.

Help them to see themselves through your eyes and recognise the gifts, values, and qualities you have placed within them.

Remove the pressure to compare their journey with others and replace it with the peace of knowing that their life has meaning because it was created by you.

Give them wisdom to recognise the ways they are already living purposefully, and courage to faithfully walk in all that you are shaping them to become.
