Purpose Unfolds One Faithful Step at a Time

Perhaps the greatest question isn't, "What is my purpose?" but "Am I being faithful with what God has already placed in my hands?"

A recent coaching conversation stayed with me long after it had ended.

The person I was speaking with said, "I'm getting older, and I still don't know what my purpose is."

It wasn't the first time I'd heard those words, and I doubt it will be the last. So many of us have asked the same question at some point in our lives. I know I certainly have.

For years, I believed purpose was something I would eventually discover. I imagined it as one defining thing—a particular role, a significant achievement or a clear destination that would finally answer the question, "This is what I was created to do."

If I'm honest, I also carried a quiet pressure. I didn't want to waste what God had placed within me. Like the servants in the Parable of the Talents, I wanted to be sure I was using everything I had been entrusted with well.

Looking back now, I realise I wasn't really searching for purpose.

I was searching for certainty.

During that coaching conversation,  I realised my coaching client wasn't questioning their ability or even their career. They were questioning whether their life was making a difference. They had begun to believe that unless they did something bigger or more visible, they couldn't really be living purposefully.

Coming out of that conversation I reflected on my own journey.

For a long time, I thought purpose was mainly connected to serving in church. If I wasn't involved in ministry or doing something that felt obviously "for God", I wondered whether I was truly fulfilling my purpose.

Over the years, however, God gently expanded my understanding.

I began to understand something I hadn't before.

Whether I was coaching businesses to improve their standards, encouraging someone through a difficult season, mentoring a colleague, leading a conversation or writing these weekly reflections, there was a consistent thread running through it all.

Different places.

Different seasons.

Different opportunities.

However, the same underlying purpose.

Helping people rise into who they were created to be.

It didn't suddenly appear one day. When I looked back, I realised it had always been there.

Perhaps purpose is often easier to recognise in hindsight than it is to predict in advance.

We often think purpose arrives like a grand announcement, yet so often it grows quietly beneath the surface, much like a seed developing unseen beneath the ground. Long before we see the first signs of growth, something important is already happening. The roots are forming. Strength is developing. Preparation is taking place.

The same is often true in our lives.

I think about Esther. Her purpose didn't begin the day she stood before the king. Long before that defining moment, God was preparing her character, positioning her in the right place and unfolding circumstances she couldn't yet understand. Looking back, we see the thread clearly. Living through it, she almost certainly couldn't see it.

Perhaps that is why we sometimes struggle to recognise purpose while we are living it.

We are looking for the flower, while God is growing the roots.

What I'm learning is that purpose isn't something we eventually arrive at. It unfolds as we faithfully respond to what God places before us, one step and one season at a time.

That doesn't mean every season looks exciting.

Some seasons prepare us.

Some stretch us.

Some feel hidden.

Others invite us to step forward with courage.

But none of them are wasted when we place them in God's hands.

The Parable of the Talents reminds us of something I think we often overlook. The focus wasn't on discovering a hidden assignment. Each servant had already been entrusted with something. The question was what they chose to do with it.

Perhaps the question we need to ask ourselves isn't, "Have I found my purpose?"

Perhaps it is, "Am I being faithful with what God has already placed in my hands today?"

That question has brought me far more peace.

It has also given me freedom.

Today, writing this blog is one expression of my purpose. If one person reads these words and sees themselves differently, then I have been faithful with what God placed on my heart today. Tomorrow may look different. Another opportunity may come. A new season may unfold.

The expression may change.

The purpose continues.

What if you've been looking so far ahead that you've overlooked the opportunities God has already placed in front of you?

What I'm Learning

What I'm learning is that purpose isn't measured by how visible our lives become but by how faithfully we use what we've been given.

The world often measures significance by size, influence and recognition.

God so often measures it by faithfulness.

There is deep peace in knowing I don't need to have every step mapped out. I simply need to keep responding to His leading, trusting that as I walk with Him, the next step will become clear in its time.

A Small Step This Week

Take a few quiet moments to look back over your life. Ask yourself, "What thread has God been weaving through the different seasons of my life?" You may be surprised to discover that your purpose has been quietly unfolding all along.

Reflection Question

Am I waiting for one extraordinary moment, or am I faithfully using what God has already placed in my hands today?

Faith Reflection

Before we were born, God knew us and lovingly formed us with gifts, experiences and qualities that reflect His purpose for our lives. As we grow into the people, He created us to be, those gifts find expression in different ways and different seasons. We don't have to force the future. We simply need to remain close to the One who faithfully unfolds it.

Prayer

Lord, I pray for the person reading this today. Where they have been carrying the pressure of trying to discover one perfect calling, would you replace that anxiety with peace. Help them to recognise the gifts you have already placed within them and give them the courage to use them faithfully, wherever they are today. Open their eyes to the opportunities that may already be in front of them and remind them that no season lived with you is ever wasted. Thank you for faithfully leading us, one step at a time. Amen.

Confidence Mantra

I will faithfully use what God has placed in my hands today, trusting Him to unfold tomorrow's purpose in His perfect time.

This week, pay attention to what you naturally bring to the people and situations around you. It may be an ability to lead, create, solve problems, care for others, build, organise, teach, encourage or simply do today's work with excellence. These everyday expressions of who God created you to be, may be revealing the very purpose He has already placed in your hands.

Purpose is rarely found in one defining moment. More often, it is revealed through a lifetime of faithful choices, one step at a time.
