Becoming Who You Were Created to Be

The life you desire begins with the person you’re becoming.

“Who am I?”
Over the past few weeks, I’ve realised this question often sits beneath so many of the conversations I have.
Sometimes it’s spoken out loud. Other times it’s hidden behind conversations about confidence, purpose, relationships, careers or business. People know they want something different, but they aren’t always sure who they are or who they are becoming.
Some feel held back by the expectations of others. Some are so focused on surviving that they’ve stopped pursuing what they know is in their hearts. Others are quietly wondering whether it’s too late to become the person they always believed they could be.
As I’ve listened, one thought has stayed with me.
Many of us long for a different life, yet we’re still holding on to the version of ourselves that created the life we’re living today.
That isn’t always easy to admit.
It’s certainly something God has been gently showing me.
For years, I believed that shrinking back was a sign of humility. I stayed in the background, hesitant to put myself forward, questioning whether I was enough and allowing fear to shape more of my decisions than I realised. Looking back, I can see that I wasn’t simply being humble—I was hiding.
Over time, God has been changing the way I think. He’s been renewing my perspective, challenging the stories I’ve believed about myself and giving me the courage to step into spaces I once avoided. It hasn’t happened overnight, and it still isn’t finished. But when I look back, I can see that I am becoming someone different—not someone else, but someone more fully aligned with who God created me to be.
Recently, someone shared with me how they were building a business. They admitted they felt discouraged because the financial growth was slower than they had hoped. But as they continued talking, something unexpected emerged.
They said, “My perspective has changed. My attitude has changed. My priorities have changed. I’m surprised by who I’m becoming.”
That conversation stayed with me because it made me realise that perhaps the business wasn’t the only thing being built.
God was building them.
How often do we measure progress only by what we can see? The promotion. The opportunity. The breakthrough. The outcome.
Yet perhaps God’s greatest work isn’t always around us.
Sometimes it’s within us.
Pause & Reflect
What version of you are you still trying to carry into a future that requires someone different?
What I’m Learning
I’m learning that becoming doesn’t happen by accident. It happens quietly—in the way we think, the choices we make, the fears we face and the stories we stop believing about ourselves.
I’m also learning that a fulfilled life doesn’t come from simply achieving more. It comes from becoming more of who God created us to be.
Perhaps that’s why some people reach milestones yet still feel something is missing. Achievement can bring satisfaction, but only becoming brings fulfilment.
Sometimes the permission we’ve been waiting for is permission we need to give ourselves—to stop living in other people’s shadows, to stop allowing fear to define us and to begin embracing who we were created to be.
As I think about my own life, I don’t want to reach the end wondering what might have been. I want to know that I embraced the journey of becoming—that I allowed God to shape me into the person He created me to be and had the courage to live it.
For me, that is what living a fulfilled life looks like.
A Small Step This Week
Set aside ten quiet minutes this week and ask yourself one honest question:
Who am I becoming?
Not who others expect you to be.
Not who you’ve always been.
But who is God shaping you to become in this season?
Resist the temptation to answer quickly. Simply sit with the question and allow it to settle in your heart.
Reflection Question
If today were the end of your life, what would you wish you had become—not just achieved?
Faith Reflection
When I look at Peter and Esther, neither fully understood who they would become. Both experienced moments of uncertainty, fear and hesitation. Yet God wasn’t simply changing their circumstances; He was preparing their character.
Through that process, they became the people He had called them to be.
Perhaps that’s what God is doing with us too.
Transformation is rarely instant. More often, it is a gradual work of renewing our minds, strengthening our character and teaching us to trust Him with each new step. As we surrender to that process, we discover that God isn’t simply preparing us for what He wants us to do—He is preparing us for who He has created us to be.
Prayer
Lord, I pray for the person reading this today. If they have been hiding, doubting themselves or living under the weight of other people’s expectations, remind them of who you created them to be. Give them the courage to release what no longer belongs in this season and to embrace the person you are shaping them to become. Renew their minds, strengthen their character and help them trust your process, even when they cannot yet see the outcome. May they walk confidently into the purpose you have prepared for them, knowing that every step of becoming is held securely in your hands. Amen.
Confidence Mantra
Each day, I am becoming more fully who God created me to be.
This week don’t ask yourself only what you want to achieve. Ask yourself who you are becoming along the way. The greatest transformation may not be what changes around you, but what God is quietly changing within you.
You are born to shine.
